It was always a dream of mine to own Jasper Jeep, so for me to be sitting here today as the owner of Tutton CDJR of Jasper (formally Jasper Jeep) it’s a dream come true. I am ecstatic to interact with the people and be a part of the Jasper community,” said Tutton, anticipating his newest RV location arriving in Jasper. “One of [the] things that pulled us into RVs was seeing how everybody is outdoors and how that allows people to learn how to take in the moment, the time, and the minute that they are in,” forsaking screen time, monitors and phones.
Tutton operates two Openroads sales and service locations, just off I-75 in Acworth and White, featuring 18 different brands of motorized, pull-behinds and fifth wheel RVs, including Winnebago, Rockwood, Thor, Bighorn, Crossroads, Cyclone, East to West, Forest River, Heartland, KZ, North Trail, Torque and Vanleigh.
“We plan to bring RVs to the lot, and add service by 2022,” said Tutton. “We are developing techs, putting them through our training at other locations to build a good foundation. There’s been a huge, and overwhelming response here.”
Tutton detailed his career path by sharing a couple of life’s lessons with Smoke Signals.
“I came from a dead-end road, to open roads,” Tutton said, “because God opens roads. I firmly believe God puts us through experiences that will grow us, and make us better, and if not for my past, I wouldn’t be here, where I am, today.” He credits a high school coach, meeting his wife, and support from his father-in-law as God-given guides along the way.
As the eldest of six children growing up in Florida, Tutton said he often helped his stepdad on weekends in his construction job, learning the trade and running a lot of heavy equipment. He said his family had little material wealth, and sometimes, things went sideways for his younger self.
“I fought a lot,” said Tutton, “I was a big athlete, a football guy.” In November of his junior year, his team lost in the playoffs, he went home, and in a rash moment, quit school. “Most people thought I’d be in jail or dead by the time I was 27. I was not the kid you’d want your daughter to marry, let alone date.”
Somehow, shortly after that fateful Friday night, his football coach found him on a construction site. “I don’t know how he found me. He told me ‘you can stay here and be a deadbeat, or come with me.’ I still talk to him today; his name is David Wilson.
“He set things up so I could live with my history teacher, and go to night school, and I graduated on time.
“It’s one of the reasons I am such a supporter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes,” added Tutton. “Fortunately, someone cared about me enough to get me back on track.”
After just one semester, Tutton proved college was not for him. He considered the military, but youthful mistakes withheld the privileged honor of service. Tutton moved to Georgia to live with his uncle, and he picked up construction trades, on the road again.
His next pivotal moment came while working near North Point Mall, building connection lines between Cobb and Fulton. Tutton frequented the Mansell Road Kroger for lunch; eventually, Tutton offered an awkward — perhaps arrogant — compliment to a beautiful young woman, a manager. As he left the store that day, Tutton gave the bag boy a $10 tip, “if he’d give that cute blonde my phone number.”
Several weeks later, the manager made that call—but Tutton fumbled. When Tutton got that life-changing call, he was leaving on a Florida road trip for a football game and cutting off the caller, he asked the woman to kindly call back Tuesday or Wednesday. “I hung up!” Tutton said, realizing his blunder driving down the highway. “She finally called back, and I apologized all over myself. It was meant to be — we met in September, and we were married on May 28.”
Around that time, Tutton realized that as a married man, he needed “a cleaner line of work.” His father-in-law, who had been in auto retail finance with Ed Voyles, guided him towards sales. He landed first at Marietta Dodge, and after about six months, applied at Ed Voyles. To this day, he oversees and manages three Voyles’ dealerships: CDJR, Hyundai, and Kia, and is partners in Voyles’ Birmingham, Ala. CDJR.
Though Tutton’s career grew within and around the metro’s perimeter, Waleska has been his home for 14 years, where he and Dana, the former Kroger manager, now live on Garland Mountain. Dana raises and breeds Gypsy Vanners, an Irish horse capable of jumping and dressage, that bears a resemblance to the much larger Clydesdales, with long feathers around their hoofs, flowing manes and tails. “We definitely bought the horses for Dana,” said Tutton.
Tutton’s children and grandchildren also live nearby; son, Dylan, helps run all the businesses, and lives on Garland Mountain with his family and two sons; daughter, Jessica, also lives on the mountain with her family, including two sets of twin boys. The Tuttons have been members of Woodstock’s First Baptist Church for over a decade.
“If there is one (or two, or three) things I will say about Drew Tutton; he represents the inner fire in all of us. He’s dynamic, passionate, dedicated to see things through. He executes amazing characteristics that are “old school” but translates to his team because they are fundamental. Something I was taught at an early age, rare in our time today, but so important to build and grow in business and better yet, a person’s talent. The best part, everyone on his team looks up to him and wants to be the best version of themselves, because that is exactly what Drew Tutton tries to exude EVERYDAY. What an example! God definitely puts people in our lives for a reason.” ~Sarah Fisher, CEO Legit Consulting Group
